The webinar “Rangeland and Pastoralism in Times of Protracted Crisis”, organized by the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) on 10 December 2025, was held within the framework of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) and the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026. It brought together experts, practitioners, and community representatives from around the world to discuss the persistent challenges faced by pastoral communities living in rangeland areas, increasingly affected by climate change, land degradation, conflict, and restrictive policies.
Moderated by Maryam Rezaei (ODI Global), the session opened with a strong call to reinforce multi-stakeholder partnerships to support sustainable development pathways aligned with FAO objectives. Speakers shared diverse experiences and context-specific solutions. In Brazil, silvopastoral systems and natural regeneration were presented as effective approaches to combating deforestation while improving pastoral livelihoods. A case study focusing on the Sahel region highlighted the vital contribution of pastoralism to national economies and food security. Other presentations emphasized the importance of mobility, herd diversity, social networks, and indigenous knowledge in strengthening resilience in times of prolonged crisis.
The webinar concluded by stressing the need to better integrate local voices into policy-making processes and encouraged participants to continue these discussions through future GASL webinars and at the upcoming GASL Global Meeting scheduled to take place in Senegal in April 2026.
