Crucial land rights indicator for the Post-2015 SDGs

The Global Working Group on Land released a policy brief in support for a broader global land rights indicator. In the brief the members of the group criticise the current indicator suggested by the Inter-agency and Expert Group on SDG indicators for diluting the role of land rights in the post-2015 development agenda.

The Group stresses the importance that responsible governance of tenure of land and other natural resources has for the successful implementation of the SDGs. It sees this importance represented in the indicator developed under the Global Land Indicators Initiative (GLII), which states: percentage of women, men, indigenous peoples, and local communities (IPLCs) with secure rights to land, property, and natural resources, measured by:

(i) Percentage with legally documented or recognized evidence of tenure,    (ii) Percentage who perceive their rights are recognized and protected.
